Nuba On Wheels: NOW! is a way to empower widows and women harmed by the long-standing conflict in Sudan. Bicycles are purchased in the area and distributed to female-headed households in Nuba, a war-torn area east of Darfur. Samaritan's Purse, an international Christian aid organization, has agreed to match simple, sturdy bikes with women who have successfully initiated small crop enterprises. Bikes will help them market their produce and transport other necessities.
Samaritan's Purse provides technology and training in 28 communities in the Nuba Mountain region of war-torn Sudan. The result is increased value of local crops and the beginning of small, family-run businesses. By providing simple processing equipment, the market value of sesame, okra, peanuts, herbs, wild fruits, and other regional food sources increases. Currently, crop growers must walk miles to sell their commodities. Bicycles purchased in the region are a low-cost, efficient way to market goods, saving time and energy needed to sustain life and expand business.
